What size fittings do I need? [BACK] [Home] [Shopping Cart]

PVC pipe is sold in sizes of 1/2", 3/4" 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 2", 2-1/2", 3" etc. The name on the pipe is loosely based on the inside diameter of the pipe. But even there that's not precise because there is Schedule 40 pipe, Schedule 80 pipe and Class 200 pipe. In all cases the name of the pipe roughly equals the inside diameter of the pipe. The only thing that changes is the wall thickness. The outside diameter remains the same. For instance, all 2" pipe, regardless if it's Sch 40, Sch 80 or Class 200 will always have a outside diameter of about 2-3/8" and they will all fit a 2" pvc pipe fitting. Class 200 pipe is the thinest, thus will flow the most water, however it's also the weakest. Sch 80 is the strongest, however it will flow the least because the wall thickness is greatest. Sch 40 is in the middle and what most plumbing projects use. All you have to remember is two inch pvc pipe glues into 2" pvc pipe fittings. 1.5" pvc pipe glues into 1.5" pvc pipe fittings, etc.

2" PVC pipe schedule 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 2" and outside diameter of 2-3/8". Thus the socket for 2" fittings is approximately 2-3/8" in diameter.

1.5" PVC pipe sch 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 1.5" and an outside diameter of 1-7/8". Thus the socket for 1.5" fittings is approximately 1-7/8" in diameter.

1" PVC pipe schedule 40 has a nominal inside diameter of 1" and outside diameter of 1-1/4". Thus the socket for 1" fittings is approximately 1-1/4" in diameter.

.5" PVC pipe sch 40 has a nominal inside diameter of .5" and an outside diameter of 7/8". Thus the socket for 1/2" fittings is approximately 7/8" in diameter.

But all you really need to know is if you buy 2" pipe, you need 2" fittings, if you buy 1.5" pipe, you need 1.5" fittings and so on.
