Black Iron - Schedule 40 Steel
Despite the fact that "black iron" has the word "iron" in its name, it is actually composed of low-grade mild steel. Mild steel is a comparably soft material that can easily be welded and cut with a torch. Industry professionals typically refer to this material as "schedule 40 steel" instead of the layman's "black iron." This is an extremely useful material due to its malleable properties. It is much easier to work with than stainless or carbon steel due to these factors. Black iron has a melting point of 2,570 degrees Fahrenheit and an operating temperature of well over 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, making it an ideal choice for high temperature applications.
Due to their toughness and durability, black iron pipe and fittings are typically used for oil and gas applications. They may be heavy duty, but they can be installed by just about anyone. Keep in mind, you may need some specialized tools to carry out the entire process, but an installation just requires parts and some type of thread tape / pipe joint compound. To connect black iron fittings and pipe, wrap the male threads in a pipe thread sealant tape, keeping direction in mind. If you don't like working with tape, you can use pipe joint compound, which is applied with a brush or rag to male and female threads before connecting.
